THE WELLINGTON HORTICULTURAL SHOW.
A flower show in Wellington after the weather we have experienced during the last few weeks must be regarded as a severe test of the powers of our gardeners, both amateur and professional, to cope with the Wellington climate, Ou the whole the show must be declared to be wonderfully good considering the high winds and changeable weather we have been having. Pressure on ouv space compels us to limit our notice to a few of the more remarkable exhibits. Upon entering the door one was much struck by. |the blaze of color that met the eye, which was displayed by Mr, Pegden’s splendid pink azalea, which richly deserved the extra prize awarded to it. A very handsome couple of heaths, or more strictly speaking, epacris, were shown by Mr. Travers. Mr. Pegden’s four fuchsias were very handsome, and commanded the admiration of the visitors. Mr. Jay's collection of rhododendrons was good ; and Mr. Mason’s roses wore, as usual, a splendid class. It Is a pity that the exhibitors have not. adopted the system of ticketing all the flowers with their names, to the best of their knowledge and ability. One may admire a particular bloom very much, and desire to purchase or procure a specimen; but with no name for a guide this is almost impossible. We should like to know the name of a splendid dark red rose shown by Mr. Mason. The first-prize pansies were really superb ; for velvetty softness and clear rich coloring the six specimens would be difficult to beat, and Mr. Boscher must be congratulated *on his success in this class. The bouquets shown were very nice, the roses among them being very beautiful. The vegetables were only moderate. The show of tools was decidedly poor ; there was not a well-finished spade in the whole collection. Class I.—For Gardeners. (Judges; F. Kirk, F.L.S.; Archdeacon Stock, 8.A.; D. Wilkinson.)
