She reports that her mate, John Blnrner. a native of Stockholm, was washed overboard during a heavy north-west gale on Friday last, off Cape Paliiser The schooner pooped a heavy sea. which swept him over. Another sea struck the vessel, and smashed her Inftt into pieces. A lifebuoy was thrown to the mate, bat a tremendous sea was running, and be failed to reach it. and was drowned. The ship Hydaspes, Cai-tain Babot. arrived at Lyttelton on the 9 h instant, with 36 families, 105 single women, and 106 single men. all in good health. A brigade was formed for rifle drill on boar’, and placed under the command of Sergeant Price, late of the 7th Tower Hamlet Volunteers. A capital b his band was also '■rganlstsd. The drums were made on board, as well as the cymbals and uriangig. The band played " God Save the Queen 1 ' on the poop every morning at 8 30, and also played at noon and at 4 p.m. dally. When the Immigration Commissioners went on board the rifle corps were drawn up In line with fixed b tyonets, and presented anus, while the band played "Of*} Save the Queen.” The effect was particularly good, and excited a considerable amount of comment, being something quite unexpected on board an immigrant ship. The bandsmen and rifles wore distinctive caps, made on board, and certainly presented a very good appearance While speaking of uniforms, wo must not forget to mention Dr. Dunkley’s aide-de-camp, a smart little fellow namerd W H. Lewis, who wore a natty uniform of jr.ey with scarlet facings, made on board, and on hw left arm the white badge and scarlet cross of th- hospital corps.
