Arrived; 11.45 a.m., Rangatira, from Wellington. WESTPORT, Monday. - JLurited ; 12,30 p.m., Luna, from Wellington. PORT CHALMERS, Monday. Arrived: Augusta, barquontine, 45. clays from Mauritius, with a cargo of sugar.—Dunedin, ship, SO days from London. She brings 33 passengers, 2200 tons cargo, and 40 tons gunpowder. Spoke the following vessels:—September 14, lat. 14'4 north, long, 25*40 west, ship Corlna, from London for Wellington; October 4, lat. 27*47 south, long. 32*41 west, ship Lockfloot, from London for Auckland. Captain Withon reports that off Start Point, August 27, Alexander Galbraith, an ordinary seamen, whilo engaged dragging the foresheet slipped on the rail and fell overboard. Two lifebuoys were thrown to him. Robert Cathcart. an able seaman, pluckily jumped overboard to his assistance ; boats were at once' % lowered away. After twenty minutes’search Cathcart was picked up,* but no traces of the poor boy were discovered. The night was pitch dark. _ It is imagined ha sank immediately. A second disaster occurred off the pitch of the Cape on October 19. Louis Kentish, an apprentice, s*ho was. at the maintopgallant masthead, lost his hold and fell (the ship at thia time was going from ton to eleven knots through the water) striking the outrigger crosstrees and maiushect before ho fell overboard. The ship was immediately brought-to. No appearance of the poor lad was seen. There was a heavy cross sea on at the time, and it was not deemed prudout to lower a boat. ' The following vessels were in the harbor last night: —Steamers—Gleuelg, Napier, Stormbird. Hinemoa, . and Tul: ships—Rauaia, St. Leonards, Wairoa, and Zedandia ; barques—Malay, Craigio Lea, Anne Melhuisfa, Australiad, and Sophia K. Luhrs ; brig Robin. Hood; topsail schooner Hally Bailey. The steamer Wellington left shortly after midday yesterday for Plcton and Nelson. The steamer Hawea left the wharf yesterday for the South. The steamer Taranaki is due here this morning from the South. She leaves to-morrow for the North. The st-eamcr Murray left last night for Nelson and the West Coast The steamer Jane Douglas left yesterday evening for Foxton. The steamer Arawata left yesterday for Melbourne via the South. .The steamer. Napier, from Blenheim, arrived yesterday afternoon. She experienced a strong westerly breeze and heavy sea across. A ship was signalled all day yesterday as b«tng off the Heads, but up to dusk her name had nq£ bean made out Very probably aho may prove to be the Jessie Keadman, frem London, now out 101 days. The Lyttelton Harbor Board tug was launched at Birkenhead on the sth July, and advantage was taken of the presence of Mr. Naacarrow in England to obtain a report from him upon tho boilers, which were tested up to 1501 b pressure without showing the slightest aijn of weeping. The tug was to leave on the 19th of August, via Suez, under the command of Captain Fox.
