The Reeßon coach met with another exceedingly narrow escape yesterday at the Nine-Mile Creek, when the mountain torrent washed the horses of their legs, swamped the coach, and endangered the passengers’ lives. The first show of the Ashburton Agricultural and Pastoral Association is being held to-day. There are 208 entries, the strength of the exhibition being in sheep, horses, and implements. Davidson, late superintending manager of the New Zealand and Australian Land Company in South Canterbury, was entertained at dinner by a large circle of friends prior to his departure for England. The jury added a rider strongly animadverting on the construction of buildings similar to the one wherein the accident occurred, and requested the coroner to forward to the proper quarter a demand that the erection of buildings be properly supervised in '.'.id future. Hubert Hogg and John Dunne were nominated to-day for the Mayoralty of Balclutha. Messrs. Blair, Usher, and Hay, engineers, accompanied by G. Turnbull and Davcy, of Dunedin, and a party of gentlemen from Balclufcha and neighborhood, sailed ground luchclutha to-day in the steamer lona. Blair is to report to the Minister -of Public Works as to the damage caused to the island by floods. About nineteen-twentieths of the island is still covered with water. Dunedin, Saturday. • The nominations for Mayor took place at noon to-day. H. S. Fish and H. J. Walter were the only candidates. The poll takes place on the 27th. An application under the Habeas Corpus Act will be male to the Judge on his return from Wellington tn determine the right to the custody of a girl at Port Chalmers. The case is said to be one of a complicated nature, and the circumstances to be such as to invest it with a great deal of interest. To suit Tyson's convenience, the wrestling match between him and Dagg has been postponed till 18lh December. A severe gale has prevailed throughout yesterday and to-day. At yesterday’s meeting of the University Council the discussion on Judge motion re dissassociatioa of the Otago University from that of New Zealand was further adjourned. The railway from Dunedin to Anderson’s Bay is to be converted into a tramway. A case, of which the facts are as follows, will come before the Police Court to-morrow. Three years ago a mother left hei infant boy with an acquaintance, to be adopted. The woman to whom the custody of the child was entrusted married shortly afterwards, and died recently. The mother of the child then sought to have it restored to her, but deceased's husband objected to give it up. As the only means to regain her child she has now laid a criminal information against the man in whose possession, it is.
