A letterwas read from Mr. James McKenzie, district surveyor, stating that he was at present engaged in laying off roads, and he would be willing to give information or consult with their engineer regarding the survey of any land*, the general object being that the owners of • laud between Pabautanui and the Hutt, at present without road access, might have the same surveyed and laid down upon tho Government plans of the district. A letter was read from Mr. J, H. Walker, stating that he had arrive l in the Waikanae with his boat on October 27, and would commence ferrying next day. A letter was read from the Public Works Department, stating that, as requested, the department would allow the railway fence to be altered at Kaiwarra, to admit of the erection of a weighbridge, the Council undertaking to remove the weighbridge and restore the line of fence to its original position on the receipt of a month’s notice. A letter was read from ratepayers and residents in the old Porirua-road, asking that a portion of the fence at section No. 4 be removed to the proper boundary. It was resolved that the surveyor should survey the old Porirua-road at section 4, and report to next meeting. BILVERSTREAM. The Chairman stated that since the last meeting of the Council ho had gone up to Silverstream to look at the damage done to the protective works, and he found that several of the groins bad gone, and it would be necessary to replace them. At Blenheim it had been found a good plan to moor logs one above another, and it might be advisable to adopt the same plan at Silverstream, but not to the same extent as before. Tbo cost was estimated to be not more than £SO. At Blenheim this plan had been found to bo successful where groins—fixed works—had been an utter failure. The proper course would be to give the surveyor the necessary authority to proceed with the work. Ou the motion of Councillor Taylor, seconded by Councillor Spee»T, the surveyor was authorised to carry out what protective works were required at Silverstream. tenders. The following tenders were opened for No. 3 contract of the Mungaroa to Waikanae-road;— James Cleary and Co., £1317 4s, or £7 8« per chain; Thomas Powell, £1949; Robert Lyon, £l4 17s per chain/ It was resolved that the tender of James Cleary and Co., at £7 8s per chain, bo accepted to the amount of £IOOO. THE CHAIRMAN. Councillor Smith said that as this was the last meeting of the present Council, he had a resolution to propose. He believed that they had one of tho very best County Chairmen in New Zealand. Their Chairman had devoted a great deal of time to hia duties, and no doubt the fact that the work of the Council had been well carried out was due to tho way in which tho duties of Chairman had been conducted. Seeing the blunders which other Connty Councils had made, he thought the Hutt Council had kept pretty clear of the rocks during the past year He begged to move a vote of thanks to tho Chairman. Councillor Lancaster fully endorsed all that bad been said by Councillor Smith. He had not seen or heard of any complaints, and if any existed they would have been heard of. He would very cordially support the vote of thanks to the Chairman. The motion was carried unanimously. The Chairman thanked the Council for their motion, and also for the cordial co-operation they had giveu him at all times. Had it not been for this tho business would not have been done so satisfactorily as it bad been. The meeting then adjourned
