HUTT COUNTY ELECTION.
TO THE EDITOR OK THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —.Would you kindly allow me to say a few words in your widely circulating journal regarding the Hutt County election, which takes place on Wednesday, the 13th inst. I am a settler residing iu Karori, and naturally take a deep interest in all that concerns its welfare. From what I have read in the papers, it appears that the chief ind icement. for briugiogforward Messrs. Graham and Fiunimore is the idea of having a new road to Karon by way of Donald’s tea gardens. It is assumed .that because Mr. Graham is Clerk of the City Council his influence would be sufficient to induce the City Councillors to allow the proposed new road to be made past the reservoir, and that the large interest possessed by Mr. Finmmore iu the adjoining lands would secure his support for the project. This may be all very well, but the settlers of Karori and Makara should think what they are about before they place parties in power to carry out any such scheme. Where is the necessity of having two roads to a district ? Besides the cost of formation of the new road, it would have to be kept in repair, and X doubt very much if the Coum.y Council will contribute towards keeping' two roads in repair. In this case, a manifest injustice would be done to the settlers who have used the present road for upwards of 87 years. Are their rights to bo wholly ignored, and for what ? For making a road to a tea garden 1 I object to any such folly being perpetrated, for tho following reasons :—(I) That the road, if a better gradient is to be obtained, would be at least three-quarters of a mile longer than tho present one ; (2) that the new road, if made, would run, alongside the reservoir, and all the drainage would run into it, thus polluting the water and endangering the health of the citizens of Wellington ; that the proposed road would bo of no service to the Upper Karori or Makara settlers, unless it were taken at tho back of Campbell sand Monaghan’s grounds and this' would entail a large expenditure for compensation. Far better improve the present road—form a junction between Polhill Gully and Baker Hill, aud this would meet all the requirements of the district.—l have, &c., Karori. Karori, November 11.
