(from a correspondent.) Christchurch, Monday. The Press says that G, McCullough Reed, the editor of the Otago Daily Times , has been offered, aud has accepted, au appointment as emigration agent in England for a period of two years. It is also rumored that part of bin mission is to assist the Government journals iu arranging for special European telegrams the Government undertaking to assist in the matter. It is rumored also that Mr. R. J. Creighton, of San Francisco, has been seat for, under ft promise that he shall be appointed editor of one of the Government journals, the Neio Zealander or the Otago Daily Times.

Grace, the native agent at Waikato, staying at Duffley's baths for the good of his health, has been interviewed by the natives about the opening of the road between this and Cambridge. Christchurch, Monday. The Mayor of Sydenham was re-elected today without opposition. It was not known by the general public that to-day had been gazetted a public holiday. It has not been kept by the public, though vSunday hours are kept at the telegraph offices, and the public offises are closed. The sale of racehorses is now proceeding. At the settling up to-day the following stakes were paid over :—ll. Ray, £1429 15s ; J. \V. Mallock, £4i7 10s.; ’*v. F. NeiUon, £548 3s ; J. Gilligan, £270 10s.; A. Devery. £166 S''.; H. The half-yearly meeting of the National Insurance Company was held to-day, when a dividend ot :0 per cent., with a bonus of 6 per cent, per share, was declared. £15.000 was carried to the insurance fund, and £5469 to the next half-year. The dismounting competition between the Dunedin and Christchurch batteries, which it was found impossible to go through at Forbury Park on Saturday last, took place this morning at the high school grounds. The conditions were as follows:—At the word “action,’'rear to come into action, fire three rounds and dismount the battery, change b >th wheels, limber up, and the detachment at the rear stand at ease. The visitors were victorious, finishing in three minutes exactly. The time of the others was not taken, as they did not finish. They were unfortunate in smashing their handspike, and lost some time in ousequence of havi g to use the sponge staff instead. The visiting detachment are no novices, and have evidently been well drilled. An extraordinary disappearance of a passenger has been reported to the railway authorities. As the special train from Christchurch was approaching Rakaia on Saturday night an alarm was raised that a man had fallen off one of the carriages. Two passengers who were standing on the opposite platform witnessed his disappearance. They atonce gavethe alarm,and lost no time in communicating with the guard; but before the train could be stopped a distance of fully three miles had been travelled over. As another train was due at Ashburton shortly after the arrival there of the special, it was impossible for the latter to go back any distance, but fully a dozen people went back to the spot where the man fell, and could discern uo trace of him. One of the gentlemen who was on the platform opposite to the man who fell off says chat it was bright moonlight at the time. He saw him fall on to a heap of stones, and he appeared to lie there doubled up. To-day is observed generally as a holiday; there are sports at Forbury Park and a promenade concert at the Caledonian Grounds.
