THE WELLINGTON BENEVOLENT INSTITUTE.
A meeting of .the above body was held on Tuesday evening, at which the following gentlemen were present:—Mr. Jonas Woodward (in the chair), Ven Archdeacon Stock, Eev. B. \V. Harvey, Rev. R. Coffey, Revs, Messrs. Reid, Pater, on, Dumboll, West, Redstone, Potter, 'J'rivett, Williams, and Harrington, and Messrs. Holclaworth, Lewis, Bishop, Lipman Levy, H. C. Wilson, and J. E, Smith. A number of cases were considered and relieved, after which A letter from Miss Greenwood, on behalf of the Wellington Ladies’ Christian Association, relating to the establishment of a homo for destitute women was read. The association expressed itself particularly anxious to bespeak the advice and assistance of tho Benevolent Institution in n matter, which appears to lie so much within its province, and recommended that a cottage should bo built, bought, or rented for the purpose of - establishing a homo., i Considerable discussion arose upon the subject, Ultimately tho following resolutions were moved and carried
Moved by the Rev. J. Paterson, seconded by L. Levy, Esq., 1 and carried unanimously,— (1) That it is not deemed desirable at the present time to take steps for providing house accommodation for women just discharged from gaol; '2) that towards the rent of a suitable house for women leaving the Hospital, who have no immediate employment or home to go to, also those who, either from being strangers or in poverfcv, or from other causes, find themselves in sudden need of temporary lodging, the committee will cheerfully contribute 15s. weekly for a period of s«x months ; (3i the committee .will be prepared to assist by a contribution from its funis every case (on its merles) that may be referred to it by the Welegbitu Ladles’ Christian Association ; (4) that s the voluntary, labors of the Wellington Ladies* Christian Association include an important branch of the necessary benevolent work, application should bn made to the Hon. the Colonial Treasurer, asking that the ordinary contribution to its funds may bo supplemented £1 for £l, as in the case of the Weilington Benevolent Institution. It was also proposed that, for the obtaining of reliable data respecting the best moans of dealing with. women just discharged from gaol, the secretary be requested to write to the Dean of Christchurch, the Kev. Dr. Stuart, of Dunedin, and Dr< Maunaeil, of Auckland, for information as to the working of the several institutions in their .respective cities established for that object. The meeting then adjourned.
