CENSUS RETURNS.
"We have received some further tables of census returns, iu anticipation of the complete abstracts. The following table shows the number of occupied holdings of over one acre in extent iu the different provincial districts, and also specifies tho largo pastoral holdings over 20,000 acres in extent :
Tho number o! freehold properties over one acre in extent is set forth in the table given ; also the land rented for pastoral purposes from the Crown, tho acreage under crop, and in plantations :
In 1871 there were only 3987 acres of plantations. The following table shows the number of horses, cattle, and sheep in the colony, exclusive of those owned by Maoris. The total number of stock in the different provinces is as follows :
For the purposes of comparison we have prepared the following ;
There are 2,611,926 acres fenced iu by fences of various descriptions exclusive of wire fencing, and 8,755,639 acres by wire fencing only; making a total of land enclosed of 11.567,565 acres. In 1871 'there were only 6,770,299 acres fenced in. There wore at the time of taking tho census 37*1 steam threshing machines, and 511 worked by horse or by water power; 4829 reaping machines, 34 steam ploughs, and 32 steam harrows.
