The following are the duties collected at the Customs yesterday
The following are the Customs duties received at this port for the week ending October 30,1878: — « rl £ d.
In’the import trade no changes in quotations have occurred during the past week calling for notice. Business has been fairly active, Stocks generally are heavy, and in some cases beyond our requirements, .but there appears to ho little disposition to submit to low rates, except In some special cases, such as the bulky article cement, which has been sold at auction at 13s 6d per barrel for Knight, Bevan, and Sturge'a manufacture. In colonial produce trade continues dull, and no business to any largo extent is done, transactions being limited to small lines for current wants of the retail trade. Bacon and hams are slightly firmer, as prices have advanced in the South, and prime cured are worth 8d to 9d per lb. Butter in kegs, if prime, is worth 10il, with very little coming forward. Cheese is becoming low in stock, and best Canterbury is worth 7jd per ib. Flour—Little doing, and prices depressed. "We cannot quote best brands of Canterbury and Oamaru mills higher than £ll for bakers' lots. Oats are firm at 4s 7d to 4s9d; maize, 5s to 5s 3d per bushel; bran. Is Cd to Is 7d. Potatoes, 80s per ton. Mr. Francis Sidey sold by auction in the Arcade Buildings yesterday;—Town acre No. 879 for £775 ; section in Patea for £l7 ; six town sections in Ellesmere for £29 ss: 59 acres rural land in Ellesmere for £l7O. Mr. Hansom’s property in Carabridgc-terrace ; also the section in Hanson-street, and the allotments at the Hu:t were passed, and are now for sal© privately. BY TELEGRAPH. AUCKLAND, Friday. Mr. Buckland reports Fat sheep In steady demand, shorn, 2£d; fat lambs abundant at 10s to 13s; fat cattle, 28s to 37a Cd. NEW PLYMOUTH. Friday. At Courteney's cattle sate the prices realised were : —For wild yearlings, £2 12s Cd to £3 11s; steers, from 2 to 3 years old, £5 10s to £0; 4-ycar olds, £olss; store cows, £5 to £5 10* ; dairy cows, from £8 to £9 15s. Twelve head of fat cattle, mixed, fetched from £8 7s Cd to £9 ss. ’ OAMARU, Friday. The grain market remains inactive; "Wheat is quoted at 8* Od to 3s X Id, according to quality; feed oats, 3s Pd; milling oats, 4s: flour, £0 10s to £10; bran, £3; pollard, £5 ss; oatmeal, £2O; pearl barley, £2l. M KLliO URNEMAR K KTS. The following is Messrs. Goldsbrough and Co/h report for the week ending October 13 : WOOL. We catalogued 7070 bales for our sale to-day, and had spirited bidding, but owners' views being in several Instances considerably above the market, a number of largo clips were bought in. Those sold realised excellent prices, greasy ranging from 7d to the latter for 30 bales from Brlpplck. Wo sold 140 bales Messrs. JUandalc’s at 12i}d, and liad offers ranging from lOd to 12"jd for several Riverine clips—in fact, buyers bid up very freely, and if owners hud been a little more reasonable in their views, wc could have cleared the whole catalogue at fuU rates. Fair average washed realised 20d, and scoured up to 221<1 per lb.* The total sold was 2100 bales, but no doubt a largo proportion will bo placed by private contract, tho offers made being close up to the rates expected. SHEEPSKINS. 1 JLWc report steady sales during the post week, ana the bulk of tbo supply offering was readily quitted at quotations. Pelts are coming forward freelv., Butchers* green skins realised from 3s 6d to 0s Qd each ; do dry do. 2s Cd t o 5s . 6d each ; dry skins, inferior to medium, 3d to 5d perlb; do, medium to superior, 6d to 7d per lb. ■/ ■' ; hides. . ? . . . . • There is a moderate demand for heavy weights in good condition,; light and inferior hides attract no attention, ancV calfskins are almost unsaleable. We quote—Ox hides (average sizes), 18s to 2Ss 6d each ; cow do, do, IDs to 15s each ; Victorian salted, 2ja to per lb; calfskins, nominally about 2sd do* v kangaroo skins. * '■ . Picked parcels meet with some inquiry at prices ranging from Ud to lOd per lb ; inferior and medium skins are most difficult to quit at from 3d to 5d per lb. tallow. At auction' yesterday we offered a largo catalogue, which was cleared out at quotations. Wo note a better f. eling, and have had several inquiries for shipment; as yet, however, there Is no appreciable alteration in value. Wo quote—Mutton, from £3O to £32.per ton ; bosf, from £29 to £3l do; mixed, from £25 to to £29 do. GRAIN, Wheat.—During the past weak we notice a firmer tone in the market, and wo have sold 525 bags at the following quotations: Prime milling, 4s lid to 4s lljd ; medium to good, 4s 9d to 4s lOd; and inferior, 4s 7d to 4s 8.1 d per bushel. Flour.—Wo quote good country brands at £lO 5s per ton. Oats.—Wo- sold a parcel of 'Victorian feed at 4s lid per bushel. Barley. —There is very little coming forward, ami extreme rates can bo obtained, ranging up to 9s per bushel, for large parcels. Hops aro dull of sale. Wo disposed of a few pockets Victorian at lOd per lb.
