THE SYNOD.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sin, —“D. B.V’ letter might possibly, if unnoticed, convey to members of the Church of England and to others an impression that we had been negligent afc the late Synod in an important part of our duty. If “D. B.” had attended each day he would have seen how very carefully the necessity of providing clergy had been noticed in the report of the standing committee and in many o£ the resolutions. Since the Synod the standing committee have authorised the Bishop to expend a sum of money to pay the expenses of a candidate who has offered himself, to extend over, say, three years. A year ago they authorised Bishop Abraham, the Bishop’s commisary in England, to draw on tho Diocesan Fund for £2QO, to pay outfit and passage for two clergymen; wc hope that the half will be very shortly claimed. “D. B.” judged that it was a laughable matter to refer the matter of a Theological College to the Bishops of New Zealand for consideration in the General Synod, which would meet in two years. The Synod will meet in January., 1879. Any present apparent failure has been because there has been no good central Theological College, but local colleges in some of the dioceses, It was thought well to place this subject ia the Bishops’ hands. Any scheme prepared by them could bo laid before each Diocesan Synod, and then before the General Synod. Such a plan would be then likely to win a general acceptance, and no time will have been wasted, as “D. B.” somewhat suggests. A good central college would naturally attract students. It would have been most unwise for this diocese to have sought to establish another local college,—l am, Ac., A. Stock.
