John Dayman, a volunteer in the Naval Brigade, was shot through the knee this morning when marking at the butts. It is feared amputation wall be necessary. . Dunedin, Saturday. Tliis week’s TaUet publishes a sort of black list of the names of thirty-eight members who voted against Mr. Curtis’s Education Bill, and recommends Catholics to place a copy of it in the,most frequented part.of their houses, lost they should forgot or mistake their enemies. Madam Tasco, Mdlle. Hens,’and Mr. Hampton took part in tho Choral Society’s, performance last evening. They gave their services gratuitously, and returned from Timaru in order to keep their promise to bo present. Tho opening of the boating season was to-day inaugurated by a procession of boats. Nino boats took part in it, but a wind rising, many others were deterred from joining tho procession. Balolutha, Saturday. At a meeting of tho Clutha County Council yesterday representatives from the Borough Council attended to request assistance in establishing a punt where tho bridge was washed away. Tha Council agreed to pay ouo-third of the cost, and voted £IOO for tho purpose. It is believed that tho Bruce County and Borough Councils will pay the other twothirds. The Council voted in all nearly £SOOO for new works. The Borough Council is energetically repairing the main street, eo that traffic may bo resumed. The Government is pushing ou tha repairs of the railway lino, and It is expected that trains will got as far as Renfrew-street by the beginning of the week; but it will take months to get tho station yard repaired. Tho railway bridge has been planked, and tho viaduct is being planked for foot passengers. The river banks behind the township aro washing away at a most alarming rate. If tho present rate is continued for a month the buildings in tho township'will be reached, and unless protective works bo at once undertaken the township will have to bo abandoned. Tho ground as yet being washed away is private property, and tho Borough Council cannot act, because
