Sir, —In your ably written leader in this morning’s issue you say:—“From a public point of view, however, this course of action is less worthy of admiration, for really it is hard to see what good can accrue from continually abusing men whose actions have stood, and can stand, the strictest investigation, and who, upon every occasion, have proved their willingness to submit their conduct to the examining powers of the tribunal lawfully constituted to scrutinise, and, if necessary, reprehend the same.” (This is very good.) “In the matter of this alleged roll-stuffing, for instance, what can bo fairer than the action of the Government, who are doing their best to obtain an impartial opinion.” (Also good, if true.) “Upon their prompt action in checking a scandalous attempt to eliminate, on frivolous pretexts, a number of names from tho electoral roll in question for the purpose of securing a seat for the family of the revising officer, whose action was an audacious attempt to inaugurate in New Zealand the rotten borough system that for centuries was England’s greatest curse, and because this effort to establish a great political evil has been expeditiously suppressed, the editor of the colonial journal,” &c.
