(from our own correspondent.) Dunedin, Thursday. The Daily Times proprietory is fearfully chagrined at the breakdown of the monopoly of the special wire, which has been planned in various forms for the past three years. It gave way when it saw the light for only three days. It was regarded as a trump card to cripple the Morn Iny Herald, which has not only a much greater circulation than, the Daily Times, but also alarmed the Times by its thorough distribution over the country, and by having broken through tho auctioneers’ compact, and secured more auctions and property sales than tho Times has. The Daily Times Government advertisements for some time past have been worth to it from £6 to £8 per day. George Fenwick has gone to Christchurch to confer with Beeves and Hamilton. Horton left Auckland for Sydney, taking the Government memorandum with him, and will arrive to find himself checkmated. Mathew Holmes’ remarks in the Upper House have attracted considerable attention hero. There is a strong feeling against tho monopolists.

Thomas wrestles Dagg ou the 14th December for £2OO a side. A special committee was appointed at a public meeting at South Duuediu. They have recommended that tho amalgamation of Caversham with the South Dunedin and St. Kilda Municipalities, or their amalgamation with the City of Dunedin, would bo decidedly advantageous. Invercargill, Thursday. James Clark’s application for 1250 acres of land in the Wairoa district was again introduced at the Waste Lands Board this afternoon, and after considerable discussion tho Board granted it. Tho question of the laud being included in tho reserve set apart for the Otauto and Nightcap Railway purposes was not overlooked ; but it was pointed out that the reserve had not beeu gazetted, and that Clark’s application was lodged long before the reserve was thought of, and that hence the Board had power to deal with the laud. McGarduer’s application ef 973 acres ou Moraley Creek was considered, and it was resolved to reserve a strip of country half a mile wide on each side of the creek for coal mining purposes, and to grant McGavdner, all he applied for that was left outside the limits an dpHned.
