Rakaia, was charged by Captain Metcalfe with; absenting himself from the ship without leave.; Tbo master gave the man ’a very good character, and stated that he was one of the best men in the ship. ■ ; ’( Ik was sentenced l to four weeks’ imprison-; mont. ‘‘ n - ' ASSAULT. 1 ' : George Nbwbath and L. H. Whitaker were charged with assaulting William Tianey on; tho lOth’inst.,''on the Hutt road. It appeared from' the evidence that the 1 complainant was driving along the road, and tho two defendants stood in the middle of the road and struck Tinney on the arm with a stick. .’His Worship inflicted a penalty of Is and costs. : ‘ : • ? VAGRANCY, John Hill- was charged by the police with; vagrancy, and was sentenced to seven days* imprisonment.; " ; . ; His Worship cautioned him that if ho was; again brought before him he would be deprived of his liberty for 12 months.’ - APPLICATION TOR A riIOTECTION ORDER. Harriet Vince applied for a protection order against her husband, Richard Vince, oh the! ground that he was an habitual drunkard, and; neglected to support her and her children. ’ His- Worship granted the order. The husband to pay 255. a-week towards the support: of his family. CRUELTY TO A RAT. Charles Tatuer was charged with unlawfully and cruelly torturing a rat. Mr. Fitz Gerald appeared for the defendant. His Worship said that this was a case in which the law gave him, no power to punish, though he would very much like to in all such cases where cruelty, was proved; It was' therefore no; use going on with the case, * which 1 was accordingly dismissed. v ' : • BREACH-OF CITY BY-LAWS; J; * • John Kirkcaldie Was summoned by the Inspector'' of .Nuisances' with obstructing the. public thoroughfare. < ’ t I ’ Defendant, in 'defenco, stated* that lie had received A number, of •caeca by’the atoaraer Alhambra, and then again a lot r more by _ the;. Richard Bulliman, for driving an express without lights, was fined Is. aud costs, LUNACY. 1 John King, charged with lunacy, was sent to the asylum. '
