(I*ER PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland,' Saturday. The Mayor has received a notice that the City will be divided into three wards, according to a petition of burgesses. Giiahamstown, Sunday. The Hon. Hr. Pollen, in a telegram to the Mayor, denies obstructing the Thames Harbor Amendment Bill in the Upper House, and says the fault is with their member, Sir George Grey, in leaving such a measure to the last hours of the session. The Karaka Tunnel Bights and Water Supply Bills have been similarly kept back. Napier, Saturday. The boating season opened this afternoon with a procession of boats on the Tutaekuri River, in which the boats of the three clubs, the telegraph operators, and those of the vessels in port took part. There were several scratch matches afterwards. The weather was very fine, and the attendance of spectators was large. A case of supposed small-pox at the Spit has been exciting some alarm during the last few days. The child afflicted with the disorder is under medical treatment for small-pox; but is considered by the medical attendant to be of a mild type. One medical man, however, says it is not small-pox at all. The child was vaccinated in 1875. The Wananya to-day contains an apology in Maori to Major Mair for a libel against him in a letter published in that paper. The Wananya does not give the English version of the apology; but the following is a correct translation: —“ Notice to all the World. —This is a notice to all the tribes and all the people of the world.—lt is all false and slanderous the words of the letter ‘Te Arawa Katoa,’ which were published in the Wananya, sth October, No. 27, page 312. Speaking of Mr. Mair and his family, whom we have known for over thirty years, and we have neither seen, known, or heard anything wrong of them during all those years down to tho present time. Tho words of that letter of ‘Te Arawa Katoa’ are perfectly false and without any foundation, for we know that they (the Maoris) are descended from respectable people, and have boon holding high positions all the days and years they have been in the Island. They cannot be accused by anyone of having done any wrong whatever. We are very sorry indeed that those lying accusations should have been published in the Wananga by mistake. Me'whiuuey, at Kinsington, were burned down last night. A largo number of cattle have died in the country districts from eating tutu. Shearing is very backward, and tho severe weather will have a bad effect upon this year’s clip. It is stated that the snow is far from being melted in tho country districts, and that further floods may bo looked for. A young man named John Moßao, while assisting in shunting trucks laden with coal this morning, got jammed in between them. When picked up he was found to be very much mangled, his thigh and several ribs being broken. He is not expected to recover.
