THIS DAY’S AMUSEMENTS.
Wellington marks high holiday to-day. For a time the effects of the rain on Friday last seemed to have damped all tho enthusiasm of our townspeople on tho subject. But now that the line has been again made ready for traffic, and since the Governor has declared his readiness to brave tho caprice of the clerk of the weather, Wellington people have made up their minds to onjoy a good holiday in honor of the event. Great preparations have been made in all quarters in consequence. The volunteers will parade at Mount Cook Barracks at 2 p.m. Tho Artillery will form a guard of honor to osoort his Excellency the Governor to the Bann Reserve, 1 and will also fire a grand salute in honor of the occasion. A grand procession ,of Odd Fellows, Reohahites, Temperance Lodges, and school .children will form at the bottom of Taranaki-street, in Comtenay-plaoe, to proceed from thence to the Basin Reserve, whore the athletic sports advertised in another column will be held. Xu the evening the children will have a great feast, and the town seems likely to be really well illuminated. We hoar of great preparations from many quarter*, especially at the To Amend of the town; Mr. Smith, of To, Am House, and many of his neighbors being conspicuous. Tho New Zealand Bank, and Levin and Co’s premises, and tho Fire Brigade stations have been also noticed for the preparations made. In the evening a ball will be given by tile citizens of Wellington at the Imperial Opera House, and another ball takes place at the Princess Theatre. Those who attend the railway demonstration ball at tho Imperial Opera House will do well to observe that a special regulation has been issued by. tho superintendent of of police, requiring all carriages to proceed by way of Manners-street, and to leave by Cubastroet. Tho Circus will bo open both during tho afternoon and the evening, and several other sources of amusement will be found advertised in our columns. Witli such a varied bill of fare, Wellington pleasure-seekers of all tastes may be suited.
