CENSUS RETURNS.

The tables relating to the population and houses of the colony, according to the census of 3rd March, 1878 (in anticipation of the complete abstracts), have been presented to Parliament in pursuance of the Census Act, 1877. The total population of the colony, exclusive of Maoris, is set down at 414,412, of which 230,998 were males, and 183,414 females, and the number of half-castes 968 males aud 979 females, and of Chinese 4424 males and 9 females. The number of inhabited, houses and huts is set down at 79,657, and of tents and other dwellings with canvas roofs at 2931. The number of travellers ‘“and persons sleeping under drays or camping out is stated at 129 1 Europeans and 13 Chinese. The population in the 63 counties of tho colony (exclusive of those living in boroughs) is put down at 143,829 males, and 103,788 females; the num-ber-of inhabited houses and huts being 48,263, and uninhabited 3116. The total population iu the 59 boroughs of the colony is 163,028, of which 83,899 arc males and 79,129 females. The population and dwellings in the several provincial districts (exclusive of Maoris) is thus stated—Auckland, 44,800 males, 37,861 females, total 82,661 ; Taranaki, 5173 males, 4290 females, total 9463 ; Wellington, 27,877 males, 23,192 females, total 51,069 ; Hawke’s 8ay,'8509 males, 6506 females, total 15,015 ; Marlborough, 4233 males, 3274 females, total 7557 ; Nelson, 14,385 males, 10,743 females, total 25,128 ; Westland, males 10,557, females 6355, total 16,932 ; Canterbury, 50,424 males,* 41,498 females, total 91,922 ; Otago, 64,850 males, 46,619 females, total 114,469.
