The dis-' puta arises out of a seizure by Beale of premises owned by him which had been in the occupation of Hammond. The question is one of disputed title - to possession. The Hero brought twenty Devon heifers to the firm of McLean. Woodgear, agent for Burton’s circus, left for Nelson in the steamer Taranaki to-day, - to arrange for the appearance of the company. Cornford, Kennedy, McOougal, and John Begg. ‘All the working men who supported previously the Grey party were warm in their denunciations of the tactics of the Native Minister in attempting to get this electorate into his hands through Maori votes. Hokitika, Tuesday. At the Supreme Court Jnines Cox, charged with attempting to poison Sarah Jacobs, was acquitted. Cox afterwards pleaded guilty to a charge of attempting to commit suicide. He was released on his own recognizance of £SO to come up for judgment when called on. Charles Clifford, charged with criminal libel on W. R. Rathby, was acquitted. Christchurch, Tuesday. The polling for tho election of five City Councillors resulted in the return of Messrs. Jenkins, Tremane, Clifford, Cass, and Binstoad; the Returning Officer, in making tho declaration this morning, said it was not announced last night in consequence of the di-gracefnl proceedings attending the declaration of the poll at tho last election. The Grand Jury found a true bill against E. Hoff for tho murder of his wife. He will be tried to-morrow. John Reynolds was sentenced to four years penal servitude for arson. James Smith, indicted for a similar offence, was acquitted. An analysis of ten samples of milk made by Professor Bickerton shows tho whole to be of good average quality. ; Timard, Tuesday. At the Resident Magistrate’s Court to-day Edmund Ball, proprietor of the South Canterbury Times, was charged before Mr.- Beetham, R.M., with libelling Hayes and Benhamo, circus proprietors j Mr. White for the prosecution, and Mr. H nmmersloy for tho defence. Accused was committed for trial at the sitting of the Supreme Court to he hold in December, but was admitted to hail. At Waimato yesterday Charles Girling, a bushmau, was committed bn a coroner’s warrant for tho manslaughter of his wife. Her parents reside at Oamaru. Dunedin, Tuesday. The contract has been signed for tho extension of the Green Island branch railway, and work will be commenced shortly. It is stated that a Supremo Court action will probably ensue iu consequence of verbal remarks made regarding the stability of a well-known mercantile firm in this city.
