CITY COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting of the City Council was held in the Council Chambers last night. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Councillors Miller, Young, Thornpjou, Logan, Dixon, Allan, Greenfield, and Moss. MINUTES. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed, SALARIES OF CORPORATION CLERKS. * The Mayor observed that under a clause of the Municipal Act the salaries of the clerks in the Corporation office was left with the Mayor' to decide. H« thought this was too grave a responsibility for him, and he objected to be placed in such a position. The matter was left in the hands of the Finance Committee, to consult with the Mayor. WELLINGTON FIRE POLICE , A letter was received from Mr. Wilson, secretary of tho Wellington Volunteer Fire Police, asking for their annual subscription. The Town Clerk intimated that the Council voted £25 last year. The matter was referred to the Public Works Committee. PUBLIC WORKS REPORT. The following report of the Public Works Committee was passed, with. but very few alterations. Clause 11 Was struck out The committee beg to report —1 Tlvata culvert has been lairi in Dock-street at a cost of £35, the work being immediately necessary owing to damage canned by the late rains. 2. That the extra storage for water at the reserve h- s boon completed. 3 That sundry objections have been lodged against the alteration of the Willls-street levels. The committee b g further to recommend—4. That lenders for the removal of nightsoll for two yea s from the Ist of January, 1879, be at once called, and that penal clauses bo inserted in the contract, 5. That Hollaud-street be drained at an estimated c sfc of £35 ; and that the remainder of tho 'necessary works in this street bo executed at an estimated cost of £lO7 10s., on condition of the residents contributing half the expense. 6. That a dozen new meter lamps be obtained. 7. That Air. Mace’s application for c rtain roads through tho Recreation Reserves lately taken over by the Corporation, bo not acceded to. • 8. That Lambton-quay be channelled with concrete, at an estimated cost of £BO9. 9. That Nelson-street bo metalled, and the footpaths kerbod and formed, at an estimated cost «>f £6O. 10. That a drain be laid down at Pipltea-polnt, In front of the premises of Messrs. O. W, Clayton and others, at an es (mated cost of £3O, on the residents agreeing to defray one-third of the cost. 11. That by-laws for the regulation of vehicles other than hackney carriages, as submitted by tho Town Clerk, bo adopted by the Council. 13. That he water race in theatres, and similar public halls, be charged at the same rate as stores. Ac, 13. That a drain be - laid down in Fcatherston-terrace at an estimated coat of £42. 14. That the footpaths be farmed all round Sussox-square at an estimated cost of £4>o. 15. That Bowen-terraco bo put in a proper slate of repair on the residents paying ©noli df the estimated cost of same, £SS. 10. Th t the footpath in Oeorge-strcct bo formed and kerbed; estimated cost, £27. 17. That Mooro-stroot be kerbed and channelled with asphalte ; catenated cost, £25 'lB. That two crossings be laid »own at tho intersection of Ghuzneo street and Cuba-streot. 10. Thataccou ts amounting to £412 10s. 7d bo passed for payment. MISCELLANEOUS. The Inspector of Nuisances submitted a report on the streams running through Te Aro. The matter was referred to the Public. Works Committee. A report from the City Engineer wag read relative to Mr. Climie'a drainage scheme ns compared with that of Mr. Clark. Tho Council resolved that the report should be printed. TENDERS ACCEPTED. Forming footway, Wallace-street C. McKirdy, £B9 15s. Kerbing and metalline Waiter-street—J. Jay, £lO 17s. per chain. Forming and metalling Brook-street—J. Jay, £lO ss. per chain, dement—2so casks, at Its. sJd. f Guthrie and Larnach, accepted conditionally on its being a proper brand. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £2086,185. 3d, were passed for payment. SPECIAL MEETING, The Council then held a special meeting to consider by-laws for tho regulation of vehicles other than hackney carriages. Councillor Logan to move, —That clause 7 of the Public Works Report of the 3rd October bo rescinded. Councillor Thompson to move, —That a largo map of the city be prepared, showing all tho old streets and all new streets taken over by the Council, the said map to he - hung up u the Council Chamber opposite thn fireplace.
