RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.
Wednesday, October 2. (Before T. A. Mansford, Esq., K.M.) WIFE DISERTION. Charles James, on remand, was charged on warrant with leaving his wife unprovided for. His Worship said he had received a telegram from Greymouth to the effect that the accused’s wife had received £6. He considered tho warrant had been issued rather hurriedly, and dismissed the case. BREACH OP CITY BY-LAW. George Thompson was charged with leaving his horse and dray unattended in a public street. Defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined 2s. 6d. and costs. ASSAULT. Augustus Herbon was charged on the infer* mation of William Clansey with stabbing him with a knife on the 2nd inst. Prisoner pleaded not guilty. Complainant deposed that he was a cabdriver,and whilst drivingdewnDixon-atreet the previous night his horses shied at tho defendant, who was lying on the ground. He got off his cab, and assisted the man to get up, when the latter stabbed him with a penknife. His Worship said he would remand the accused until Saturday, and then decide whether he would treat the case as one of common assault or as an indictable offence. PROTECTION ORDER, Anne Abraham applied for a protection order on the grounds that her husband was an habitual drunkard and neglected to support her. Mr. Ollivier appeared for the complainant, and Mr. Allan for the defendant. The parties in this case reside at the Kaikouras, and had been married for 21 years. From the evidence it appeared that the wife had left her husband five times on account of his brutalities to her. The case was adjourned until Saturday, in order that it might, if possible, be settled amicably. '
