Stockowners (*aya an exchange) will be pleased to learn that the question of the efficacy of inoculation in the prevention of pleuro is now in a fair way of being set at rest by the highest veterinary authorities. It will be remembered that some time ago the Royal Agricultural Society authorised a series of experiments in inoculation to be conducted at the Brown Institution in London, under the superintendence of Professors Burdon, Sanderson, and Duguid. At a meeting of the Royal Agricultural Society held on 3rd July last, Professor Duguid reported that the first series of experiments were completed by Ist March. Of the nine animals inoculated, one died from other causes soon after being inoculated, and the other eight were exposed to the contagion by cohabitation with diseased animals. Of these two were sold to a butcher and the lungs examined and found healthy. * Four more were sold after being kept und'T observation for nearly three months after the exposure of tho contagion. One was killed ou account of diseased liver and injuries inflicted on stomach and lungs by a surgical needle accidentally swallowed with the food.

The Marquis of Lome, aajs the Spectator, is to succeed Lord Dufferia as Viceroy of the Dominion of Canada, but he does not go out till November. This appointment may bo cither a great success or a great failure according to the spirit in which -the duty is conceived. Bub unquestionably if it be rightly conceived, the close connection with the Crown which Lord Lome’s marriage has given him, should be a source of great popularity. Only it will not do to expect the popularity without earning it. Lord Dufferia has been all things to Canada, —has addressed the French Canadians in French speeches as good as those of the Paris tribune, and the British backwoods-, men in*huraor as homely and graphic as even the Western States of America could supply. After such a Viceroy, who has gained all hearts, it will hardly do merely to shed pensive though benignant rays of polarised Royalty on the Canadian people. No doubt Lord Lome would make a mistake in imitating Lord Dufferin's modes and manners of Viceregal government too closely. Ho must be himself, and not an imitation of Lord Dufferia. Still, if he works as Lord Dufferia worked, and the Princess forgets she is anything but the Viceroy’s wife—which she is quite capable of doing —the people of Canada certainly will not forget that she is the daughter of .the Queen.
