THE DRAINAGE OF THE CITY.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. I observe by your report of the proceedings at the Council meeting last evening that Councillor Maginity has announced his intention of moving that the resolution of the Council adopting Mr. Clark’s scheme of drainage shall be rescinded ; and further, that the ratepayers shall be asked togiveadeoisiouas to which of the two schemes—Mr. Clark’s or Mr. Climie's —they are in favor of. I earnestly hope that the Council will decide very promptly against the adoption of any such motion. This propensity to consult the ratepayers about everything is really very childish: The gentlemen who sit at the Council-board are selected by the ratepayers to carry on the affairs of the City, and if any of these gentlemen feel themselves unable to do so the sooner they resign their trust the better. Sir, in this matter of drainage the ratepayers have waited long and patiently, and they now demand that the work shall be put in hand with all possible despatch. Let the Council decide at once as to the method of disposing of the sewage, as that is the only part of the question that is now beset with any difficulty, and having so decided let them at once proceed to carry out a work so ur. gently needed. That is the only line of conduct which will give any satisfaction to their constituents. The ratepayers as a body are quits incompetent to give an opinion as to the merits of the two different schemes, and their only wish in the matter is that the work should be done, and done at once.—X am, &c., A Thorndon Ratepayer.
