Carlyle is the County Town of the Patea County, and is situated on the banks of the Patea River, the outlet for the Patea District—a district second to none in New Zealand. River improvements and a breakwater at the entrance are now being carried out under the direction of the Harbor Board. Direct communication with Wellington will shortly be accomplished by means of a steamer now being built by Mr. E. W. Mills. It is the intention of the present Government to commence railway works at Carlyle, and meet works commenced at the Wanganui and Waitara ends of the lino. The town is firmly established, the population at the last census being about 600. Buildings of a very superior class have been erected, and a number of others are in course of construction.
