River improvements and a breakwater at the entrance are now being carried out under the direction of the Harbor Board. Direct communication with Wellington will shortly be accomplished by means of a steamer now being bnilt by Mr. E. W. Mills. • It is the intention of the present Government to commence railway works at Carlyle, andmeet works commenced at the Wanganui and Waitara ends of the line. The town is firmly established; the population at the last census being about 800. Buildings of a very superior class KaV,e been erected, and a number of others are in course of construction. The town is well endowed with town reserves, realising an annnal rental of several hundred pounds sterling, every section being leased. MR.
