(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Patea, Saturday, John McLean, the cook of Fraser and Tregeur’s party on the Moumahaki Block, was found drowned on Thursday. It was believed he had slipped down a steep bank, but it was afterwards found that powder and bullets had been stolen from the tent. At an inquest held to-day a bullet was found in the man's head, which little doubt that he has been murdered. Auckland, Saturday. The Colonial Bank is establishing a branch at Cambridge, Waikato. The jewellers have adopted the Saturday half-holiday. A company has been formed for the purpose ©f sending out prospectors throughout the Hauraki peninsula. New Plymouth, Saturday. At a meeting of the Now Plymouth Harbor Board, held to-day, a resolution was passed that their solicitor should at once be instructed to take action to recover from tho New Zealand Titanic Iron and Steel Company the fines that have accrued under their lease of the beach, which amount to £2250. • Greytown, Saturday. The success of the deputation to the Hon. Mr. Macandrevv in reference to a branch railway created universal satisfaction. It*is proposed to - give a public recognition to Mr. Wakelin and other members of the deputation for their services and advocacy* Westport, Saturday. In making a survey of the new road at Mohikinui, in Buller County, ‘the surveyor struck a coal seam five feet thick two miles from- the township. The coal is bituminous and excellent in quality. It is easily accessible, and may be brought to the port at small cost. Christchurch, Saturday. Allen Moritz, an Austrian, and master of the ketch Minnie, was arrested this morning on a charge of stabbing a seaman on board the same vessel in tho face and shoulder. Prosecutor not being present tho case was adjourned, Dunedin, Saturday. At a meeting of the City Council on Tuesday next Mr. Fish intends to move that the opinion of tho Attorney-General be obtained as to whether the Council-has power to increase the salary of the Mayor during the, currency of his office. It is also proposed to appoint a commission with a view of securing the co-operation of suburban municipalities in providing a water supply for the city, Madame Cora and Yal Vose's company are drawing largo audiences in Dunedin, and at the conclusion of the season here will proceed to the Northern towns of the colony. Invercargill, Saturday. The land purchase excitement is unabated. Mauy applications lodged at the Lands Office have been opened, and one of the applications opened to-day is by a Dunedin firm for 5000 acres in tho centre of the Hill district. It was reported to-day that the lode, with gold visible, had been struck in Malaghan’s claim, next to and south of Hayes’ claim, and also that the lode had been struck in the Prince of Wales claim next adjoining.
