A considerable number of applications for shares in the New Plymouth Gas Company was received from Auckland after the list closed. They have not a sufficient number of shares to allot. The directors made arrangements to allot at the rate of 80 par cent, to each applicant. Mr. Atkinson is to be manager. An Auckland company is preparing plans, which are expected to be finished next week, when tenders will bo called for the supply of plant. Kumaba, Thursday.

At a meeting of representatives of the different volunteer corps of the district held last night, to discuss the proposed Rifle Association, it was decided to send delegates to Wellington to attend the volunteer conference next mouth. It was estimated that 200 members would join the association in Nelson. Christchurch, Thursday, The missing girl Doran turned up sate at Sumner. ■ ' t The man Edwards, who was seriously burnt at Albury a few days ago, died yesterday. The prospectus of a new temperance hotel is issued —capital, £IO,OOO ; 10,000 shares of £1 each.
W. J. Willcooks, who for some time has represented the New Zealand Shipping Company at Lyttelton, has been appointed to a similar position at Invercargill. Arrangements have been completed for the ’production a| an early date of the opera of “ Martha” by amateurs. It is intended to bring some of the best amateurs from Dunedin. ,
At an inquest on the body of the man Edwards to-day a verdict of accidental death was returned.
-Several candidates have signified their intention of coming forward for the City Council election. Many of those invited have refused. A letter received from Mr. Alfred Dampier says that that gentleman will shortly return to the colonies. It is intended to lengthen the South Waimakariri railway bridge by 400 feet. Mr. Paterson of the normal school has been offered the' head mastership of the grammar school at Nelson at a salary of £3OO a year. A letter was read to-day at the Board of Education from the master of one of the upcountry schools, in which he protested against the schoolroom being let by the committee for dancing, and termed that body a set of “ nincompoops.” The complaint was .referred to the committee. Lyttelton, Thursday. At a public meeting held last night it was determined to hold the usual regatta on New 'Year’s Day. .» • ' Dunedin, Thursday. The Harbor Board to-day passed a resolution that it would be willing to limit the area proposed to be reclaimed, should the question of railway station- sites be settled iu accordance with specified plaus. The Board's engineer reported that satisfactory progress- was not being made with the dredging contract, but discussion of this matter was postponed till next meeting. Mrs. Reed, of Saddle Hill, was to-day charged with perjury, but the information was dismissed on technical points. News has been received by the Suez mail that the Colonial Investment Company of New Zealand, with a capital of half a million, has been successfully floated iu Scotland. T. K. Ritchie, of the Colonial Bank of New Zealand, has been appointed general manager of the company in this colony.
