TAPANUI RAILWAY.
TO THE EDITOR OE THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —A matter occurs to me, which you can verify at leisure if it pleases you, and remark upon as it deserves, quote from'memory only. In the Public Works Statement youT* will find among the proposals Tapanui extension, 10 miles, to cost £40,000 ; and (n same list) Tapanui to Heviotbuin, 101 miles, also to • cost £40,000. 'Thus there is a liability (prospective) of £30,000 for 20J miles. In Mr. Maoandrew’s speech you will find he says the House affirmed this (first part) should be made by setting aside land, 40,000 acres I think. Then he goes on to say that the Government, taking that view, have entered into a contract so much less' than the engineer’s estimate for ten miles only for £60,000. It might be that some extra work, as a bridge, &c., might cause the one 10 miles to cost more than the other; but anyway it is put down at £40,000, which is not £60,000. In my opinion the items are divided in order to hide this, which has however slipped iu unawares elsewhere in the speech.— l am, &c.,. A Header. Wellington, September 17.
