A petition against Mr. Curtis’s Bill to legalise .denominational education, which was placed in circulation on Friday last, ha* already received the signatures of 2000 adults, and is to bs sent to Mr, Swanson, M.H.R., by the Talroa ; and, if necessary, a new petition will be circulated, it being estimated that 5000 signatures might be obtained in the city and suburbs alone within a week. Mr. Da Lias has made arrangements for Chaplin’s Southern tour. He leaves per Taiaroa to-morrow, and opens at Christchurch ou Monday. Chaplin is the beat Shaksperlan actor that has visited Auckland for many years. The bazaar in aid of St. Mark’s Church realized £530. . Patea, Monday. In the Town Hall ou Saturday evening the chairman of the Harbor Board, Mr. Sherwood, was presented with a testimonial, accompanied by a substantial present, in recognition of his valuable services rendered to Patea during a series of years, and more particularly for his untiring energy and successful working out of the river improvement project. A largo number of leading town and country settlers were present. He was afterwards banqueted at the Albion Hotel.
There is an outcry for laboring men all through the district. The ketch Huon Belle is being temporarily repaired, after which she goes to Christchurch. Dunedin, Monday.
The-Caruival in aid of "the Benevolent Institution has realised £1563, but a Bruce Auction will be held, and the committee expect to hand over £I7OO or £IBOO to the institution.
Settlers at Brighton aud coast districts are agitating for a loup main railway from Green Island to Milton.
The City Council elections to-day resulted in the return of the following candidates : South Ward; Fish, Roberts, and Gore; Leith Ward : Aldrich, Isaacs, and Doughty; High Ward; McKinnon, Walters, and Webb. The police have received a telegram from Switzers staling that Mrs. Welsh, of Waikawa station, has been murdered, it is supposed by her husband, who has not yet been arrested.
Mr. Andrew lleid, of the Hit-aud-Miss Hotel at Saddler’s Hill, was again charged with sly grog soiling to-day. Judgment was reserved.
Christchurch, Monday. The story which has been published to the effect that the Governor and patty had a narrow escape from a collision in the Lyttelton tunnel, is officially denied by the authorities, who state there was no possibility of an accident.
The earthquake on Saturday was plainly felt in the suburbs.
Ashburton, Monday.
A young man named Thomas Quinn, a native of Olomore, King’s County, Ireland, was killed at Cameron’s Springfield station through the horses ho was driving bolting and the dray striking him on the head. Death was instantaneous. Quinn was a stranger in the district, and aged about twenty-six. It is only about two and a half yews since ho came to tho colony. I There will bo an inquest to-morrow.
Invercargill, Monday. A land furore is raging here, and speculators from Dunedin and Christchurch are buying at fancy prices. A great deal of land both Crown and private has changed hand? during this week, and it is said that the Waste Lauds Board .will be deluged with applications this wefic. As a rule buyers are agreeably surprised with the quality of the land. The gteamer Oreti grounded whilst entering the New River yesterday afternoon, and remained hard and fast all night on a mudbauk. She did not get off this morning, and it is reported that she is seriously injured.
