AUSTRALIAN SUMMARY.
(per tararua at the bluff.) Melbourne, September 4. • The cable duplication has fallen through. The Press declined to give up their combination, and the Loudon board of directors refused to accept the subsidy unless the combination was given up. . The chairman of the Eastern Extension Company, in announcing the determination of the board, sent the following telegram to Colonel Glover :—“ Eastern Company have no power to allow combination. Board’s resolution of the 20th must therefore be carried out. Responsibility of breaking off negotiations must rest with the Press who will be the sufferers. They do not seem to appreciate the sacrifices which the Eastern Company makes to assist extension. Make your arrangements to leave Melbourne, as further concessions are impossible. Intimate this as the final decision.”
The sheep sales which took place last week realised about £25,000, the sales of one farm alone amounted to over £II,OOO. The weather has been very close for the time of the year. Betting on the Melbourne Cup has been very dull lately, owing to the absence of the ring in Sydney. Auckland has been backed for a large amount.
