HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.

Tuesday, September 10. A meeting of the Council was held at one o’clock. Present—Councillors T. Mason (in .the chair), Chew, Taylor, Lancaster, Morgan, Speedy, Dick, Smith, and Monaghan. The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Accounts amounting to £574 19s. 4d were ordered to be paid. Mr. W. A. Fitzherbert was appointed returning officer for the county election to be held in November next. Mr. Lancaster’s offer for the purchase of a disused road at Karori for £SO was accepted, and the county solicitor was requested to prepare the necessary conveyance. HUTT TOLL GATE. Mr. Taylor’s motion, that the resolution passed for the abolition of the Hutt toll gate be rescinded, was negatived, and also the motion proposed by Mr, Taylor, seconded by Mr, Smith, that the time of removing the Hutt toll gate be extended to the 30th June, 1879. The original motion for the abolition of the toll gate, passed at a former meeting, therefore stands. WAIKANAE ferry. The following letter was read : Waikanae, August 20. Sir, —Having applied to you for a boat for the Waikanae Ferry, and received no answer/1 now beg to state that it is utterly impossible for foe to cross passengers and mails in it. The last time I crossed it t<nk two bail out the boat, much to the disgust and annoyance of the passengers and coach driver. Hoping that you will give this your earliest consideration, —I am, &c., * Thomas Wilson. . The Chairman of the Hutt County Council. ' Councillor Smith moved, and Councillor Taylor seconded, —That tenders be called for the ferry service at Waikanae, the keener of the ferry to find his own boat, for twelve months. * This was carried, the Chairman and Councillors Taylor, Lancaster, Morgan, Speedy, Dick, Smith, and Mason voting for it, and A. Monaghan against it. MANAGEMENT OP ROADS. The following motion was carried unaui.mously : —That the management of the county roads shall be under the direction of the councillor or councillors of the several ridings, the chairman of the county, and the engineer, and that the engineer must obtain their consent before any new works are commenced. WEIGHBRIDGE AT KAIWARRA. On the motion of Councillor Smith, seconded by Councillor Lancaster, the engineer was instructed to procure a weighbridge, to be erected at the Kaivvarra toll-gate. ROADS. The following letter from the Chief Surveyor was laid before the Board “ Survey Office, “ Wellington, August 26, 1878. “ Sir, —I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter dated August 22nd, -and In reply 1 have to state that when the roads have been taken out of lauds by virtue of the reservation clause in the Crown grant no proclamation is necessary, but when they are taken under the Public Works Act the procedure therein indicated mast be followed. —I am, &c, " H. McKereow. “To the Chairman Hutt County Council,’’ LEASE OF ROAD RESERVE. An application was read from Mr. R. Prouse asking to be allowed to lease 'a road reserve ou the east side of the railway at Silverstream belonging to the Board, and alleged to be not in use for a term of ten or twelve years. The consideration of the matter was ordered to stand over until next meeting. RETURNS. A letter was read from the Colonial Secretary’s Department, requesting the' Board to furnish the following information to enable the Government to comply with an order of the House of Representatives to that effect passed on the 31st July:—Name of local body, annual income, annual expenditure, source of income, rates levied, liabilities exclusive of overdraft, outstanding loan, amount of loan authorised, by law, and endowment reserves, with an estimate of the present selling value of each of them. The Council expressed an opinion that the Government was in possession of the necessary information.
