I am strongly of the opinion that the recent heavy sea m the roadstead was not canned by any gale of wmd or by baa weather in the offing, but by a tidal wave raised by some convulsion of nature in the south polar regions. My reasons for this belief are that there have been no barometric indication? of a gale within sufficient distance to cause the sea to rise in such a manner as it did on Sunday morning; that had there baen a gale outside, the sea would have got up gradually, and not in the very sudden manner that it did ; that during the course of the day the strength and force of the waves varied (this was particularly obs rvable In the afternoon): that the sea. instead of breaking on the beach as 'if driven by a gale, regularly swirled,up the coast. lam confirmed in my opinion by a paragraph, in which it is stated thv a tidal wave was obs *rvcd •at Sumner on Sunday; and I have not the least doubt but that wo shall learn ia good time that other places have been visited in a similar manner. Under date of the 26th nit. the Newcastle correspondent of the Sii.lncii Momin't Herald write? There is very little to report in the way of shipping matters for the past week. The tr de has fallen away to such an extent th it business has drifted into an almost nominal state. Our harbor la nearly bare of shipping, and if the present at Ue of affairs continues, it is extremely probable that .a few days will see us in posses ion of an empty port, idle cranes. ftiwU general state of stagnation. The effect of the slackness of trade is particularly perceptible in the mining townships, where several of the pits have been lying idle for the greater part of tho time of late. The only vessels that have loaded for foreign ports during the week are the French barque Mirla, for Manilla, with 547 tons coal, at 16s Cd; and the C. J., for Amoy, with 560 tons coil, at 20s. There have not been any foreign arrivals in the same period, but several are expected shortly to arrive, including the British Queen, MUchless. Cavaliero, S. Polimexe, Firth of Forth, and St rah Scott, rep >rted lost week, and the ship Bedfordshire from Sydney, to load for Tuttcorm, on Home charter; and barque Guy Minnoring, from Sydney, t?load forMidra? Coast, on Home charter. The colonial barque Caberfeidh has been taken up for six trips between t'd? port and Oaraaru.
