THE TRAMWAY.

TO TUB EDITOn OF TUB. NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —Having occasion this morning to go from To Aro along Lambtou-quay I embraced the opportunity of trying our new steam car, and therefore “got aboard.” We made a fair start, but on turning the corner opposite Mrs, Power’s hotel the “ buffer ” (or, should I not say “ duffer,” sir,) gave way, and as you may suppose, the engine, lightened of its load, flew away down the street at a speed sufficient to frighten all the cabbies of our Empire City. Our engine-driver was quite up to the necessity ot the occasion, for to my great surprise he stopped, came back, and speedily produced a piece of clothes-line, and having hitched his refractory engine to the oar we again started, to meet with another mishap. We had not proceeded far when this ingenious clothes-line contrivance proved a failure, for there was a FUap and another runaway engine. The enginedriver again proved himself to be a man of expediency, and after tying several - knots wo were once more off. Again another mishap, *

for a would-be agile youth, after ringing the bell (he seemed to be in a hurry), made a spring, and as the engine was still in motion, he-measured his length in our muddy streets. Moral: Don’t be in a hurry either when you 'are* thwarted by a refractory buffer or when you jump off a car in motion.—l am, &c., Too Late. September 9.
