(PER PRESS AGENCY.) Auckland, Friday. Lord Beaoonsfield has replied to the congratulations of tho citizens. The Mayor has sent the following telegram to bo read at the Dunedin railway banquet tonight :—“ I congratulate' tho Mayors of Dunedin aud Christchurch on the completion of the iron link, and trust tho time is not far distant when the Mayors of Wellington aud Auckland may welcome tho Mayors of tho Southern cities by a tailway from Wellington to Auckland.”
Grauamsiown, Friday. A number of men who aro out of work here have petitioned the county authorities for employment. The county authorities sent tho petition to tho Premier by telegram to-day. The prospects of the deep levels have improved, aud crusbiugs aro being brought to the surface.
Gisborne, Friday. A messenger has just come in from Waiapu, and reports that the prisoners said to be concerned in the recent murder at Waiapu have boon arrested, and are in readiness to be handed over to the police on arrival of the steamer. It is probable that two other prisoners will be charged with rape. New Plymouivi, Friday. Referring to the schooner ICaiuma, that left Waitara for Manukau three weeks ago, and has not been hoard 1 of, the Herald says It is rumored the boat was unsoaworthy, and not properly found for the cattle trade. She had nine passengers'on board. Now the vessel is supposed to bo lost an inquiry should be held. The paper 'asks if there is no law respecting the inspection of small vessels’ before putting to. sea, ns it seems scandalous .they should be, allowed to depart'with passengers when they aro sometimes unfit for a crow to .bo in them. .i'V.-'j. i'-.-■

Tho Patea District Jockey Club’s programme for the Summer Meeting, to be held on February 20 and 21, 1879, is as follows : First day ; Hurdles, £35 ; Hack Hurdles, £10; Flying Handicap, £4O ; Carlyle Cup, £SO; Farmers’ Plate, £25. The very largo estate known as the Peel Forest Estate has been sold privately by Messrs. Miles, Hassell, and Co., but the price has not transpired. A blood gelding named Oamhallo, a four year old, yesterday arrived by the Albion. Camballo is the wiuuer of several , races in Victoria. He comes to run in the Jockey Club Handicap,, aud has arrived in splendid order.
Mr. B. O. J. Stevens has been elected a member of the Education Board, in the room of Mr. Rolleston, resigned. By the last mail from Melbourne a letter was received from Mr. Curtis A. Reid, the secretary of the Melbourne Cricket Club, suggesting a programme. It was arranged at a meeting of secretaries of clubs challenged by the Canterbury Cricket Association that an eleven should play Ballarat on December 27th aud 28th, and East Melbourne on January Ist and 2nd; Melbourne Cricket Club on January 4th, 6th, and 7th ; f?outh Melbourne on January 10th and 11th, and Bohemians on January 14th and 15th. Mr. Read mentions that when only two days are set apart for a match the play need not be restricted to those days, but a match if unfinished may be continued on tho following day. The members of the Canterbury Rifle Association intend giving a grand concert shortly, in order to augment tho funds of the association.

There are eight candidates to fill three vacancies in the City Council. Timaihj, Friday.
Through the train from Christchurch to Dunedin only staying half an hour, instead of 40 minutes, as previously arranged, several M.H.R.’s and other celebrities were left behind.
