Gentlemen, —I have to acknowledge your request that I should offer myself as a candidate for the Thorndon Ward at the ensuing municipal election. In reply I have only to assure you that I should have felt much pleasure in acceding to your request, but since the matter was first suggested to me I have learned that Dr. Newman, a gentleman whom I hold to be far better qualified than myself, has been mentioned as a candidate for the vacancy.
