The cry of fire ! is sufficiently startling upon ordinary occasions in Loudon, but doubly so when raised in the neighborhood of such national monuments as St. Paul’s Cathedral and Westminister Abbey. It was a. relief, therefore, to crowds of street loungers lately, when they discovered that the flames which brought the brigade from Watliug-street, and the steam and manual engines rattling through Cheapside, came not from a burning cathedral, but from the extensive warehouse close by of the well-known silk mercers, Messrs. I). Nicholson and Co,, the costly contents of which were speedly destroyed. The damage must have been very considerable, for' the flames spread with great, rapidity, destroying the storerooms, arid rising from the basement over the long lino of shops in the Churchyard. The cause of the disaster is unknown, but the loss is fully covered by insurance. The great resources of the firm enabled them tlie next day to announce the continuance of their extensive business*operations.—-London Paper.
