CITY COUNCIL.

The Council will meet at half-past seven o’clock this evening. The following is the business on the Order Paper : The consideration of the hackney carriage

by-layrs, postponed from special meeting; report from Cab Inspector as to cab stands ; City Surveyor to report as to T. W. Mills’ application for leave to lay out a new street; report of committee on municipal reserves ; Public Works Committee’s report ; consideration of tenders ; and accounts. Tho following notices of motion are set down for hearing :—By Councillor Maginity : That it be an instruction to the Qity Surveyor, in laying off the Thorndon reclamation, to reserve a portion for a market. —That steps be taken to carryout the resolution of the 6th June, in respect to drainage of the city. The Public Works Committee’s report is as follows:—Mr. J. C. Crawford’s claim for compensation, amounting to £40,000, for the land to be taken for sewage and drainage purposes, has been referred to the Drainage Committee ; as also Mr. Henry Mace’s notice of intention to claim compensation for prospective damage to arise out of same.—The committee beg further to recommend—That asphalts channelling be laid down in Nairn and Bolton streets. That in oases where water meters have not been affixed from the first, the average be taken from the first three months that tho meter is in use. • That a line of concrete slabs be laid down the footpath in Custom House-quay, leading to the wharf. That certain alterations in the curves of the city tramway, as proposed by the company, be agreed to, subject to the approval of tho City Surveyor. That street lamps bo erected at tho corner of Yiviau-street and opposite the tramway station ; also at Brook-street. That the City Surveyor be authorised to obtain a patent horse-broom and street-scraper ; also, two new mud carts with air-tight covers : estimated total cost, £2OO.
