RESIDENT MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Monday, September 2. (Before T. A. Mansford, Esq., E.M.) DRUNKENNESS. One inebriate who was out on bail did not appear and was fined 20s. LARCENY. Alfred Thompson was charged with stealing a silver-plated teapot, valued at 20s, the property of Alexander Warsaw. Prosecutor deposed that he was a tobacconist, residing in Willis-street. The prisoner with two other men came into his shop and asked the price of some goods. After a few minutes’ conversation the two men who accompanied prisoner left the shop. Witness then turned round to prisoner and said “ Good night, you are only having a lark with me.” Prisoner then took up the teapot (produced) from off the counter and went outside., Witness followed him and cried “Stop thief.” Constable Elison subsequently arrested the prisoner. Prisoner, in defence, stated that he and “two chums ” were walking up Willis-street and saw a teapot in prosecutor’s window. They (the prisoner and his chums) were all more or less under the influence of liquor, and it was suggested that they should stake 10s. each, and the one who carried tho teapot to the top of Willis-street should have the pool. Prisoner then asked for a remand, in order that he might call his “ chums ” to confirm his statement. Hia Worship, however, considered it was a barefaced and impudent robbery, and refused a remand. Prisoner was sentenced to eight weeks hard labor. civil cases. . Zohrab, Hnocker, and Co. v. J, E. Gilbert,— Claim £B2 Bs. 6d.; judgment summons. Defendant was ordered to pay the- amount sued for before the 16th instant, or in default to bo imprisoned for twelve weeks.—Bristow v. Sellar. Claim £5. Judgment was given for tho plaintiff for £l. In tho following cases judgments were given for the plaintiffs for the amounts claimed :—J. Mclntosh v. C. Chapman. Claim £SO 10s.—U. Loyd v. W. Dawson. Claim £ls.—W. Dawson and Co. v. X. Armstrong.
