OUR DEFENCES.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TXSIE3. Sir, —In the various churches throughout New Zealand we were reminded yesterday of the escape we have just had from being involved in war. Our Venerable Archdeacon, in the course of a very eloquent sermon on this subject, showed very forcibly how neglectful we had been in making preparations for defence, and what might have been the results of such neglect to tins fair city of ours had war been declared. Well would it have been had this sermon been addressed to the members of Parliament, and more particularly to the members of the Government, No doubt they have been criminally neglectful, and now that the immediate danger is past it would appear that this matter is being allowed to pass out of mind. Will neither of our members press the Government to take some action in this matter. Their continued inaction will not be forgotten by many of their constituents, myself amongst the number. —I am, &c,, Artilleryman. August 26.
