Captain Evans, left Poverty Bay at 5 p m. on Friday last, and arrived in Napier ro'datead at daylight on Saturday morning; got away at 12.15 same day, experienced fine weather, and arrived in Wellington at 11 o’clock yesterday morning. On t»’e up trip the Rangitira lost a blade off Her • ropelkr. She leaves for Napier and Poverty Bay on Tuesday at 4 p in. The schooner Ellerton, which went ashore at Wanganui, was safely launched on Tuesday. Messrs. Turnbull and Co.'s new barque Alexa. by last advices, was to be towed on tho 9th July from Sunderland to London, and there load under Messrs. Shaw, Sivill. and Co.’s flag for this port, and as tho cargo was all engaged, she was expected to sail on the 25th. She will be under the command of Captain Robb, under whose supervision she was fitted out. The Alexa may therefore bo looked for at the end of October. The ship Medea will finish discharging to-day. This vessel has met with quick despatch, and should fine weather favor tho work, she will finish ballasting on Wednesday, aud sail on Thnndiy for Anger. We notice that the stevedore of the Abeona, following the example set by the Medea, is discharging cargo at two hatches. This is decidedly an improvement on the old system. Considering the damage this vessel has sustained, she is turning out her cargo in very good condition. NAUTICAL INQUIRY. An inquiry was held at .he Custom House. Lyttelton, last Tuesday, into tho circumstance of the Raymond, brig, striking some floating object on the 14th August, whilst on a voyage from Newcastle to Lyttelton. Robert Evans, sworn, said—l am master of the brig Raymond, of London. I hold a Board of. Trade certificate. On 14th August. 1878. at 7 p.m., four miles E.N.E. of Cape Campbell light, 41.43 S. 174.23 E.. while under all plain sail, steering S. by E. compass, at the rate of six knots, wind N W., and weather clear and moonlight, ship suddenly brought up as if running over something moveable. On her head coming round as high as west, ship appeared and felt as if she was rolling end sliding on some moveable substance. Immediately ship was clear several large pieces of wood floated to the surface all around the vessel, which led us to believe that we had struck on a sunken wreck, but whether any portion of such wood came from this vessel it is impossible to say till ■we shall bo able to look at the bottom. The yards, which had been thrown aback as the vessel was brought up, were then trimmed, and wc proceeded on our course. As soon as tho vessel’s head canted southward lead was hove, and ten fathoms of water found. Bounded pumps, and found her making no more water than usual, but afterwards found her making a great deal of water. .... It was the captain's watch on deck, and at the time of striking I was standing on the poop looking about. Since we arrived at Lyttelton we have to pump every hour, but cannot ascertain extent of damage until the vessel is discharged. lam perfectly certain it could have been no collision with any vessel above water. Thc mate and an A.B. corroborated the captain’s evidence, the former adding that ho had no doubt but that the vessel was over something that was moveable : had it been otherwise the damage would have been very serious. The Collector stated there was nothing in tho evidence to show any negligence on the part of any person aboard the vessel.
