An. Austrian resident at Tabrez has furnished the Fremdenhlatt of Vienna with an account of the election of a high priest by the Parsees, or fire worshippers, of the district of Yezd, the original home and still the headquarters of that sect. In the district of Yezd the number of Parseea is very great, and there are no less than thirty-four temples raised to their deity in that neighborhood. Their high priest, who was very popular, died this spring, and was generally mourned by the Parseea both of Persia and of India. A successor was elected on the 7th of March. The election took place in a small temple, in which a huge fire had been lighted for the occasion on the ordinary altar, the priests attending in long, flowing white robes. The oldest priest present addressed a prayer to the burning flame to the effect that the deity symbolised by it would illuminate the electors and give them wisdom to choose a fit and proper person. After this prayer the votes were taken by word of mouths and the result was that Hormunga Horl Azmida, a young man of only 28, and hitherto guardian of the five most ancient temples, was unanimously elected. His election is very popular. That night the sacred fires were made doubly brilliant by the addition of much extra fuel, aud the Parseea kept up a religious revelry, dancing around the plazing flames, and singing songs of joy in honor of their new priest. At sunrise a fresh ceremony took place, the members of the sect assembling in an open field, and kneeling down before the orient sun to render it worship. Hie next day was kept as a general holiday. j gJThe newest way discovered for prolonging life js procuring the most perfect ventilation, living within proper hours, wisely regulating and directing the mind, and preserving the health by the occasion ii use of good constitutional medicine.
