INQUIRY INTO THE LOSS OF THE STEAMER OSPREY. An official inquiry has been held into the loss of the p. 3. Osprey, which was stranded at Tea-Garden Point, Porirua Harbor, on the ICth instant. The steamer was owned by Messrs. Fell Brothers, of Blenheim, and was bound from Porirua to Ohau. The following evidence was taken

John Symona, cn being sworn, deposed as follows: lam master of the steamer Osprey. I had a certificate''of' service, No. 2383, I left Porirua at noon on Friday, the ICth, bound for Ohau, in ballast, and. without passengers. There were two men on boaift besides myself. At half-past 2 p.m. the steamerbegan to make water fast. I put on the steam pumps, but the water gained on ns, and I thought it prudent to try and get her back to Porirua. When about a mile off the mouth of the bay the water got on one side of her bilge and kept her down, and she becamo unmanageable, as only one wheel was in the water. I thought she was turning over altogether. 1 set the jib and tried to keep her away, but sho would not pay off. .She was getting close in tathc reefs, and I tried to stop her and allovf the tide to shift her round. When we got clear of, the reef, with those*, sistanco of the i got her a few lengths ahead iat' 0 smooth water, ajid, was able to. let go the anctaxt, t then got some more steam on her, and tried to b a j e her out ‘with buckets. The water was putting o' fires ai this time. In spite of all efforts th'j water gained on us, and. she was settling bodily clow'.i There was nothing.left for mo but to. put the Voat ahead and tow her ashore, which I did, on a beach with large boulders on it. There was no sandy there A* soon as she touched the beach her bottom onened oiit ana, the water flowed in and ou £ Thls mat 0.00p.m. At 10 o clock wo lei' the vessel, but. stood by her all night and nest ' Ifc wa3 low wator at the tune of striding. ’ Tll J o %' e , 3el i 3 flat-bottomed, ihf leak' There 3 ™ her to discover the cause of 0 ally one in ” were several largo hole? in her especamcdT- -er bilge on the starboard side, evidently m« - , striking against a bonlder. About three w A vry the vessel had a new bottom put in her at , ellington. She is a complete wreck where she He; at Tea Garden Point, just within the north head of Porirua Harbor. I valued the vessel at about a £IOOO. She is owned by Mr. Fell, of Blenheim, and was insured for £450 in the National Insurance Company, New Zealand. I have lost the certificate of registry, which 1 got out of the vessel, bub must have dropped Hon the beach. 1 can only account fer the leak by the starting of one of the bottom plates. I am a Rechabite, and kept no liquor on board the vessel. Thomas King, chief officer of the steamer, corroborated the deposition of the captain.
