PROPOSED WELLINGTON AND WEST COAST RAILWAY.

A deputation waited yesterday on the Hon. Mr. Macandrew, Minister for Public "Works, regarding the proposed Wellington and West Coast railway. The deputation consisted of the following gentlemen :—The Hon. P. A. Buckley, Hon. Mr. Johnston, his Worship the Mayor, and Messrs. Walter Johnston, M.H.R., and Brandon, M.H.R., J. H. Wallace, F. A. Krull, C. Tringham, and James Wallace. Mr. Brandon said that at a public meeting held at the Chamber of Commerce last week it was resolved that a deputation should wait on Government respecting the railway line from Wellington by way of the West Coast, to join the Foxton and Wanganui line. Mr. Brandon proceeded to say that the traffic along the proposed line of route was increasing every month, and that if the proposed line were made it would in a short time pay expenses. The deputation now wished to receive some definite answer from the Government. He had heard several gentlemen say that there was some probability of the line being started by a private company. The Hon. Mr. Macandrew said that it would be better for the deputation to wait for a few days, as it would be premature for the Government to disclose their intentions, which would be announced when the Public Works Statement was made by him in the House. Mr. Brandon said there was a feeling abroad that railways were being pushed on in the Middle Island, to a far grearer extent than in the North. He thought that the proposed line now under discussion was one of vast importance, as it would form a link in the main trunk line between Wellington and Auckland. Mr. Macandrew said that his personal opinion was that the proposed line was one of importance, and should be proceeded with if possible. The Public Works Statement would be made, in all probability, at the end of the week, when this matter would be referred to. The deputatiou, after thanking Mr. Macandrew, withdrew.
