HARE’S SYSTEM.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —On what principle does the present Government oppose the present proposal of the hon. member for Waikato ? I notice Mr. Barton lias referred to illiterate mobs as a pernicious class, and goes back to the mobs of Paris and Home in proof of his assertion. What a mockery ! Why, he has only to recall the circumstances of his own election. I am well aware he was quite light in his denunciation, but I hope the Wellington “ mob,” as he calls them, will not forget it. Until Hare’s system, or some adoption of it, is applied, there can be no equitable distribution of seats or no thorough representation in the country. I hope you will continue your efforts to keep this most important question before the public, and If the people are wise the next general election will find every candidate opnoaed to it debarred from entering the House. ' That it is a more democratic measure than any emanating from the radicals now on the Treasury benches is no reason why it should not be passed. Truly the present Government bid fair to become despots of the worst order unless they are soon made to feel that the country cannot be trifled with in such a way, as all their measures lean to despotism, and not to democracy.—T am, &c., A Democrat.
