THE PUBLIC WORKING MAN.

TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sir, —I notice from the Dunedin telegrams that the Otayo Times in a leader suggests that “ on the occasion of the first successful through journey by rail between Christchurch and Dunedin,” the citizens should congratulate Sir Julius Vogel, by cable, on the important era in the history of the Public Works of New Zealand. Now, it strikes me that an equally important era will be the opening of the Masterton line as far as Eeatherston ; and I can scarcely imagine that the people of Wellington will quietly let the occasion pass without recognising the services of Sir Julius Vogel, not only to Wellington, but to the whole colony. I think Wellington, being the seat of Government, should take the lead in recognizing the obligations of the colony to Sir Julius, not only on account of his past services while here among us, but alsD for his advocating our interests at Home on every occasion which has presented itself. I cannot help feeling that our Parliament is not at all in accord with the people of the colony in regard to Sir Julius, otherwise it would have manifested in some substantial manner its estimation of his past and present services.—l am, &c., Y. Z.
