FEATHERSTON RAILWAY.
TO THE EDITOR OP THE NEW ZEALAND TIMES. Sis, —As great interest is taken by the inhabitants of this district as to the completion of the railway, I deemed it advisable to take a trip along the railway line, so as to satisfy my own curiosity, and for the information of myself and curious friends. I started on a pedestrian expedition along the formation of the line for about three miles, when I met with a number of men busy laying sleepers and rails, and from what I could learn it was expected that the i-ails- would be laid to Peatherston by the 15th lust., or in about a fortnight. I proceeded along the line as far as the Rimutaka Hill, or what is known as the incline, owing to hearing so many contradictory reports as to the feasibility of an engine being able to work or traverse such a steep hill. On enquiries, I was informed that by remainining a short time I should see a lax-ge engine' descending the hill with . rails and other material for the ’ construction of the railway, and so to satisfy my curiosity I remained, and ultimately saw the engine approaching heavily laden and descending very, steadily at the rate of four or five miles per hour, and I understand it can be stopped on any part of the hill with the greatest ease. My attention was drawn to the rails on this part of the line, where there is a rail laid in the centre of the two ordinary rails, and appeal’s to be higher from the ground, and rests on pedestals, or what is known as chairs, and has a fine appearance and seems a piece of very fine workmanship; and as no work of this description has been previously done in the Southern Hemisphei’e great credit is due to the overseer, Mr. Reeves. I fixmly believe from the energetic manner in which , the railway is progressing, that it will be open for traffic much earlier than was anticipated, and will prove a great boon, to the community of the Wairapa.—l am, &c., C, Edwin Booth, Settler. Featherston, August 1.
