In' running down her easting, between 4Gorin. and 47sec. south, she lost'several sails. ' Off Tasmania she spoke the •hip Medea, from London to Wellington, on July 24; all well. All tho vessels in harbor had their bunting halfmast yesterday, on account of tho dc ith by drowning of Captain Balllle. of tho schooner Enterprise. A number of the tramway cars have been landed from tho barque G. M. Tucker. They are rather showy-look!ng carriages, and are being landed in firstrat o order. The ship Medea, from London, 05 days oat from the docks, arrived off the Heads on Saturday afternoon, and was. boarded by Pilot Holmes. As there was a strong north-west wind b owing at the time, the ship was unable to get in. On Sunday, however, she got a slant, and;|durlng the afternoon sailed in, and brought up close to Somes Island. The passengers have all arrived in good health/ and no doubt will got ashore to-day. Bhe brings a large general cargo, consigned to Messrs. W. aud O. Turnbull. Tho steam collier Easby a rived at the whirf at 5 p.m. on Saturday. She left Fort Chalmers, at 2 p.m. on the Ist, with light south-west winds to abreast of Oamarn, tbenco strong northerly wind to arrival at Lyttelton at noon on the 2nd : left again at 3.30 p.m. tho same day, with strong northerly winds, which Increased to a gale off the Kalkoura*. Strong northwest winds and head sea were experienced across the Strait till arrival here as above. The Easby sails for Sydney to day. The two coal barques Edwin Bassett and New Brunswick from Newcastle, with full cargoes, arrived here yesterday morning. They both left Newcistlc on the 27th Inst., anti (experienced southerly winds and heavy easterly weather on the run across. Tho steamer Go- Ahead from Aklteo arrived at the wharf at half-past I yesterd »y. bhe left last Friday, and experienced strong west and north-west winds throughout the trip. Tho barque Courier from Melbourne, consigned to Messrs. W. and G. Turnbull with cargo, arrived In harbor late on Saturday. She report* leaving Melbourne on the 2UJi in it, and experienced strong southerly winds across. The Nsplcr arrived hero at 2 o’clock yesterday afternoon. Hhojeft Blenheim the same morning at 8* experienced fine wither across.

LOSS OF CAPTAIN BA.ILLIE. OP THE SCHOONER ENTERPRISE The schooner Enterprise, which left here on the 27th nlt.. arrived In harbor early yesterday morning, with the melancholy tidings that Captstn BallUe had been drowned at sea. It U currently reported that ho Jumped overboard and committed suicide. On going on board "wo were furnished with fc he following particular* The schooner left here on the 27th ultfor Wanganui. Bad weather set in almost Immediately after getting outside. The wind increased steadily until it blew a perfect gale, and the vessel was headed for Fort Underwood. On tho third night at sea the gale was still blowing, and the schooner was hove do. A sudden squall blew away the foresUyiall and main staysail, carried away the main stay and upper stay, sprung the malntopmast, and shipped largo quantities of water. A succession of heavy gales were then encountered. Sh« wai twice off Wanganui, but ©wing to the boisterous weather was unable to croee the bar. On Saturday morning at 4 o clock the man at the wheel cried out, "The captain has jampedover. board.” Tho mate and one of the teamen at this time were aloft. Directly the man at the wheel sang oat that the captain was overboard, tho mate oame.down from aloft and throw a life buoy overboard. By this time all hands were on deck, qnd the master had sunk. There was a ttemenduous sea running atthe time, and It was impossible to lower a boat The vessel at this time was about eight miles to the southward of Kapltl. The mate, Jlr, Day, then determined to bring the vessel back to Wellington, and she arrived hero as above. From what we could hear-on board tho vessel It appears that Captain Brillle had been in low spirits since leaving, and it la thought that he Jumped overboard during a fit or temporary insanity. Captain Baillia was a master mariner of considerable experience, and has had command of aom* very fine vessels, particularly the Wild Duck, which made several smart passages to Lyttleton from London. We understand that lie was part owner of the Enterprise, No doubt the heavy weather he met with o\itside.together with losing a quantity of sails, preyed on hl« mind to such an extent that ho became deranged and jumped overboard. One of the saddest circumstances connected with the calamity la that his wife Is on her way out from England.
