Just before the adjournment of the House of Representatives yesterday, it was resolved in committee of the whole House that supply be granted to her Majesty. The report of the committee will be considered to-day, when the Imprest Supply Rill will he introduced by the Colonial Treasurer. As will be seen on reference to our Parliamentary report of yesterday’s prooeeedings, Mr, Barton has given notice of motion for Wednesday next, calling on the Government to cause an inquiry to be made without delay into the charges which the-hon. member made against the police when addressing his constituents at the Theatre Royal after his election. Yesterday afternoon the address in reply to the Governor’s speech at tho opening of Parliament was presented to his Excellency at Government House, wheu the ceremonies usual to the ocoasion were observed. From the answer given to a questipn in the House of Representatives yesterday, the Government does not intend to bring in a Bill this session dealing with laud drainage. _ The same reply was given to another question as to whether the Government intended to introduce a Bill during the present session for the regulation of coal mines. Mr. Taiaroa, M.H R., arrived from the South by the steamer Wanaka yesterday. Mr. Charles Dillon and Miss Edith Pender were also by, the same steamer, en route foe Auckland, where they playran-engagement to Mr. R. J. De Lias.
. A inhering of persons who have lately purchased sections in Soarborongh-terraoe from Messrs. Mace and Jackson, was held at the Star Hotel last night. Mr. Whltehouse was in the chair. It appears that a portion of the conditions of sale was to the effect that the street should,be formed in compliance with the Municipal Corporations Act. Mr. Mace was present and stated the cause of the delay, and intimated that a new bond was in course of preparation, and when it was completed and signed tenders would be at once called for the completion; of the work. The meeting resolved to. present a memorial to the City Council, requesting them to undertake the formation of Austin-street, as the other work would be almost useless unless this were done.
The following appointments are notified in a N.Z. Gazette issued yesterday;—K. S. Bush, Esq., of Raglan, T. Buchanan, Esq., of Wellington, and E. Oudaille, Esq., of Waitahuua, to bo justices of the peace for the colony. R. S. Bush, Esq., J.P., to- be R.M. for the District of Raglan, vice W. Harsant, Esq., resigned. Captain William Boutledge, of the Napier Artillery Volunteers, to be Major; and Major E. Withers, of the New Zealand Militia, to be commanding officer in the Auckland and Thames Districts. Notice is given-that, the Clutha Artillery Volunnteeca are disbanded. J. M. Watt, Esq., R.M., is appointed chairman of the Licensing Court for the District'of Port Chalmers ; H. H. Tufton, Esq., Deputy Land Registrar for the Otago District; H. C. 3. Baddely, Esq., to be Deputy Registrar of the .Supreme Court at Nelson ; E. Bamford, Esq., to be Deputy District Land Registrar and Examiner of Titles for Hawke’s Bay, &e.
The Equitableßuildingand InveatmentCWpany of Wellington, which, it will be remembered, is- the outcome of the old Permanent Equitable Building Society, has declared an interim dividend for the half-year ending the 30th day of Juno at the rate of ten per cent, per annum. The operations of the company, which commenced business on the Ist day of January last, have been attended with marked success, and in addition to the .dividend now declared there is a large surplus to be carried to the credit of a reserve fund. This must be exceedingly gratifying to the shareholders and the management, who may bo congratulated on the success already achieved and on their prospects in the future.
This evening a concert is announced to take place in the Athemcum, under the patronage o£ Sir Grorgo Grey and the other members:-of the Ministry, hia Worship the Mayor, and other leading citizens, in aid of the funds of the Cricketers’ Association. An excellent programme has been prepared, and amongst the items we observe some trios and quartetis by some of the best known amateurahere. The piano, accompaniment will bo supplied by -Mr, Raymond, who has kindly volunteered his services. Tickets for the reserved seats and other parts of tho house were in demand yesterday, and a full house is confidently anticipated. . .
A special meeting of the City Council was held last night for the purpose of receiving a deputation of carpenters and shipwrights, relative to the construction of a dry dock at tho To Aro reclamation. Some very extensive plans regarding the same, _ prepared by the district engineer, were laid on the table; His Worship informed tho deputation that the Corporation would do the best they could for the interests of the shipbuilding trade and the citizens generally. A - report of the meeting will be found elsewhere.
This evening a complimentary benefit will be tendered at the Theatre Royal to Miss Jennie Nye, who is deservedly a great favorite with the theatre-going portion of the public of Wellington. The programme, which will bo found in our advertising columns, is an attractive oue, and a full house may bo expected on this occasion. The name of the post office hitherto known as Toanoraki,” near Dunedin, has been changed Jio that u| “ Enfield.”
The tramway' cats will be landed on the wharf to day, so that in all probability the tramway will be in full work in about a fortnight. The officesof the Colonial Fire and Marine Insurance Company of New Zealand have been removed'into the new offices on Custom House-quay, near the Bank of New Zealand.
A general meeeing of the Wellington. Building Society, lor the payment of subscriptions and the sale of shares, will be' held at the society’s office, Panama-street,-this evening at 7 o’clock.
There was very little business done at the Municipal Conference yesterday. Mr Travers, City Solicitor, was present, and gave his opinion regarding the wording of “ private streets, &c,” as mentioned in the Municipal Corporations Act of, 1877. His remarks will bo found elsewhere.
Tho-mau Lorimer, who was charged at the Police Court on Monday" witli stealing a diamond ring and other articles from the Star Hotel, will" bo brought before the Resident Magistrate to-day.
An amateur concert wos held at the Princess Theatre last night for the benefit of Mr. Dimond, late ticket oollootor at the Theatre Royal, who has lost the use of his right hand through the bursting of a pistol. There was a largo attendance, and the performance passed off most satisfactorily. At the Star Hotel last evening a meeting was held of gentlemen who served in the Rifles and Rangers under Colonel -Macdonald at Wnihi in 1868. They met for the purpose of making arrangements for holding a social reunion, for which certain preliminaries were decided on.
One of the seamen of the barque Elizabeth summoned the master of the vessel yesterday for an alleged assault and false imprisonment. The damages were assessed at 450. Mr. Maniford intimated that , under the Resident Magistrates Act ho had no jurisdiction to try the action. The case was however proceeded with by treating it as one of common assault. After heating the evidence, his Worship gave" judgment for the plaintiff for 410 and costs.
