Tucker, and Mercury: brigs—Neptune and Jane : brigantines— Endeavor, Sarah Pile, and Aratapu. The schooner Clematis, from Lyttelton, arrived in harbor late last night She left on the 30th, arid experienced strong west winds across. She will haul in to the wharf to-day to discharge. Tho barquentlne Mercury, from New York, via Lyttelton, arrived In harbor last night. She’experienced a southerly wind across tho Strait. Tho brig Star, from New York to Lyttelton, which, it will be remembered, put in to Rio in a leaky state, has for some cause or other put into Melbourne, - In. formation to tho above effect was received yesterday by a telegram from tho captain asking.that his letters might be forwarded. ' The ketch Falcon, which left here on Friday for Havelock, put back late on Tuesday night with tho loss of both anchors and SO fathoms of chain. After she left here she encountered a severe north-west gahv and the vessel ran to Cloudy Bay, where she anchored at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The gale still increased, and on Sunday at midday both chains parted. Sail was at once made under close-reefed mlzzen andi inner jib, and on reaching tho Strait she was hbve-tes till 2 a.m; on Monday. The head sail was then stowed, and the vessel head reached in shore. At 3‘p.ra. she was off Waipapa, when Captain Leslie determined to head for Lyttelton, but-the wind dying away, and changing southerly, he shaped his, course. So r Wellington, which was reached at midnight as above. Tho two colliers, Jane and Neptune, from Newcastle, arrived last night.' Tho Neptune left on the 19th. and has made a fair passage considering the late boisterous weather. The Jane was 25 days coming across, and experienced light and variable winds until off this coast.
The steamer Wellington arrived in harbor at 11 a.m; yesterday. She reports having left Nelson at 7.30 on Tuesday night,' and arrived at Picton at 4 o’clock next morning; left there again at 0 a.m., and arrived hero as above. She reports a heavy southeast sea In the Strait. . *
The brigantine Aratapu, which arrived in harbor on Tuesday night with a cargo of timber cmaigued .to Messrs. EUaby and Co., will commence discharging to-day. The topsail schooner Hannah Barratt, which put In here through stress of weather yesterday morning, reports the.schooners Cynthia and Edith Reed going into the Sound on Tuesday.
The Taupo,. for’Auckland and East Coast, sailed yesterday at 1 o’clock. Tho Wellington reports the schooners Zior and Shepherdess loading timber at Picton, The Wanaka, from the South, is due here to-day. She -leaves again .during tho afternoon . for the Manukau. ’ . .
The schooners Marmiou and Jnllns Vogel were loading timber atKalpara for Wellington on Monday. The .steamer Wellington, for Picton and Nelson, sails to-day.
ARRIVAL OE TIIE G. M. TUCKEE. Tho - barque O. M. Tucker, from New York via Dunedin, arrived off the Heads yesterday afternoon, and got into harbor at 7 o'clock last night. She reports leaving Port Chalmers on Monday, and expetinced strong west and nor-west gales on the way up. She left New York on the 25th February, and experienced north-west winds until running into the northeast , trade: on March 14th, in hit. 24 north. It proved a good wind, and carried her to lat. -3 north, hut was succeeded by a long spell of doldrums, tho Line being crossed on the 23rd March, In long. 30 west, when she took the south-east trade. Tills was a miserable affair, very light and uncertain, and being much to tlie southwa-d, compelled her to make tack for tack from Son Roque, on tho Brazilian coast, to Pernambuco, which was sighted on the lat April. -She then got a slant o{ wind, and was in 10 south on tho sth April. Grossed tlu> meridian of Greenwich on tho ■iUh April, in lat. 40"48 south; and thoa took tlie westerlies. Passsed Cape of Good Hope on April 29th.'in 1at.‘40.40 south, and carried wciteriy winds-until tlie 9tU May, in long. Bieaat, lat. 41 south, when she had variables for one day, succeeded by north-west winds. A succession of strong westerly gales were then cxperienced/during which the vessel shipped much water, but she always kept going; never having to heave-to, her day’s work being from 190 to 210 miles. .Grossed iho meridian of tlie Leuwia on tlie 25th .May, in lat- 25 south, and when in long. 135 cast the wind took southing, but clear, without fog. Passed Tasmania on Juno 2, when she got a southwest wind for one day. Ort the 3rd the wind hauled' to south-south-east, and she worked up to abreast of Milford Sound »n the 10th, when three days of calm succeeded. A light north-east breeze took her down thocoast.-and on tho 14th tlie wind went into the south-east, hauling to the south-south-east when off tlie south end of Stewart's Island. She worked up to tho coast, and made tho Nugget light af 4 a.m. on tlie 18th, when the wind came out from the west, veering to south-west, and brought her to Port Chalmers Heads at 11 a.m. same day. faho stood off and on until taken In tow by the Kopntai, and brought to an anchorage at 8.15 p.m. The easting was made on the parallel of 44. She will bfthauled Into tho wharf to-day.
