Considerable discussion took place on the subject of Doherty v. the Board of Education, in which case it will be remembered the plaintiff, Mr.'Doherty, a schoolmaster under the Board, sued his employers, at the last civil sittings of tho Supremo Court, for alleged libel, wrongful dismissal, and breach of contract, and obtained a verdict in his favor, against which verdict the Board appealed. Mr. Bunny suggested that the matter should bo postponed until the pext day, but this was objected to by the Rev. Mr. Paterson, who was opposed to their proceeding further in tho matter, and also by the Yen. Archdeacon Stock and others. A reference to the minutes showed that when a deputation from tho Board waited upon the Minister of Education that gentleman did not advise the Board to interfere with the verdict of the jury. Mr. Hutchison ultimately moved that instructions be given forthwith to the Board's solioitor.not to proceed farther with the matter. This was seconded by the Rev. Mr. Paterson. The Chairman (the Hon. 0. J. Pharazyn) said if tho motion were carried he would resign. After farther discussion it was resolved to postpone the matter until the rest of the business before tho meeting was disposed of, tho Chairman, the Yen. Archdeacon Stack, Messrs. Beethara, Toomath and C. Pharazyn votin'* in favor of the postponement, and the Bov. Mr. Paterson and Messrs Hutchison and Gisborne against it. It was resolved that the question as to extending the lease of tho land on which the To Aro school is to bo built bo referred to a select committee, consisting of the Ven. Archdeacon Stock, Rev. Mr. Paterson, Mr. Hutchison, Hon. 0, J. Pharazyn, and Hon. Mr. .Gisborne.
It was resolved that the applications for new schools at Mnngaroa, Upper Hutt, Pahautanui, and Tawa Flat be referred to the Inspector to report upon. The offer of Mr. Maunsell relative to the Waihikiki school was considered. Mr. Maunsell offered a house, and the residents agreed to contribute towards the teacher's salary of £IOO a-year, on condition that Mr. Skipper be appointed teacher. The matter was postponed. In reference to the vacancy for nn assistant teacher at Mastsrton, it was resolved to appoint Mr. Smeaton, a gentleman lately arrived from Scotland, subject to the approval of the local committee. ■
After the consideration of some routine business as to applications for repairs to school buildings, &c., the Board adjourned until today.
